Nowadays, everyone talks about the end of the world, allegedly predicted by the Mayan civilization.

According to certain interpretations of the famous Mayan calendar, at the end of December 2012, the current cycle or the “Era of the Fifth Sun” will end, and a new era will come, followed by various disasters.

However, despite a lot of different theories and rumors, scientists claim there is no reason to worry. So if you are concerned about the claims about the Mayan prophecy and the end of the world in December 2012, you can relax.

The Mayan civilization

There are no predictions by the Mayan civilization about the end of the world in 2012, assured researchers from the National University of Mexico, who study the ancient cultures of Mexico.

Ancient scholars calculated their calendar till December 21, 2012, but never pointed out that after it, the end of the world would come. It just ended, that’s all. Also, the Maya supported the notion that “history repeats itself at some point“, and then the countdown begins again.

Shortly before, a German scientist Nikolai Grube from the University of Bonn also pointed out in one of his articles about the ancient population of Mexico that predictions about the end of the world don’t exist.

“Anyone who analyzes the hieroglyphs of the ancient people will be convinced of the absence of any written notice of an impending global cataclysm that would allegedly affect the planet”, said the expert.

Scientists themselves still haven’t fully figured out the story of the introduction of the Mayan calendar to the general public and what provoked the rumors about the end of the world in 2012. The Mayan calendar remains one of the most mysterious objects of this ancient civilization.

According to the ancient Mayan calendar, which consists of about 394-year periods, known as “baktun”, the 13th baktun finishes on December 21, 2012. The number 13 was sacred for this tribe. The calendar shows that on this day, the time “expires”.

The newly found Mayan calendar

Moreover, the oldest calendars of the lost pre-Columbian civilization that came to light by American archaeologists do not contain any apocalyptic prophecy. Instead, they predict that the world will continue its course untroubled for many thousands of years.

Apart from this, the calendars also reveal that the Mayans knew astronomy at least half a century earlier than we thought and that their science was not secret, reserved only for the few, but accessible to many and widespread in their society.

A team of U.S. archaeologists discovered calendars carved on walls during the excavation of a house in a Mayan archaeological site in Guatemala.

The relieves, which date back to the 9th century, depict scenes and symbols used by the Maya to calculate the movements of celestial bodies and compose their calendars.

As described by scientists in the related article published in the journal Science, the symbols comprise at least five different calendars:

  • a lunar calendar lasting 29.5 days,
  • a ritual calendar lasting 260 days,
  • a solar calendar lasting 365 days,
  • a calendar of 584 days based on the motion of Venus,
  • a calendar of 780 days based on the motion of Mars.

The house belonged to a prominent person but not a member of the royal generation, which, according to experts means that astronomical knowledge was not the privilege of few but circulated freely in the society of the Mayan civilization.

Faced with so many discussions in recent years about the total destruction of Earth at the end of the year, William Saturno, an archaeologist at the University of Boston, felt the need to put things in place by revealing what exactly the symbols on the walls of the excavated house predict.

“Contrary to the popular prejudices, there is no hint in these calendars that the end of the world will come at the end of 2012. Instead, the ancient Mayans predicted that the world would continue and that in 7000 years, the situation would be exactly like it was then,” he said.

This also echoes Anthony Aveni, professor of astronomy at the Colgate University of New York who participated in the study. The astronomer said that calculations in the calendars cover more than 6000 years or more than five millennia from 2012.

No threat from outer space

Apart from the Mayan calendar, what about astrophysics? According to the data of the American space agency NASA, there are no planets or any other celestial objects threatening the Earth. Also, there is a strong warning system against wandering asteroids, which, however, are not observed.

Even the neighboring planets won’t come together in the near future, and even if it happens there is no threat to us. Finally, storm bursts of solar activity take place with the regularity of about 11 years, and although they may happen in 2012, they won’t have disastrous consequences.
