In our lives, we are given many choices, most of which we overthink. We overthink what we want for breakfast, what we are going to wear, or how much shampoo to use that morning.

Why do we overthink these simple things as much as we overthink going to the doctors, setting up a savings account, or even going back to school? The reason is that we are unable to stop overthinking.

As a society, we have become conditioned to thinking there is more to something than its face value. If you are getting stress headaches, you are overly tired or just plain stressed out, here are some tips to stop overthinking situations and be happy with your decisions.

1. Nothing Is Set In Stone

While this tip generally applies to smaller situations such as breakfast or if you are going to pair your socks that morning, it can be applied to life changing ones too.

No matter what it may be – from buying a house, setting up a savings account, or even buying a car – you can always change your mind later on. Yes, you may have to sell your house and move, but there is still a way for you to improve the situation if you find you made the “wrong” choice.

2. Seek The Advice Of Others

Many times, if there is a big decision looming, such as taking on a career advancement, there can be a lot of pros and cons to go over. While you may be at a standstill, others are new to the situations and can give you their thoughts. Some will be constructive; others are not so much. Be sure that when you are seeking advice, you trust the sources.

3. Trust Your Gut

Our ancient ancestors did not have the predictive technology we have now. Instead, they used their natural instincts and gut feelings to guide them through their daily tasks. “Should we go on a hunt today?” “No, something tells me that is not a good idea.” Little did they know, a pack of wolves was on the prowl that day.

Either way, the point is that deep down, you know the answer to your situation. If you feel like something is amiss, and no matter what kind of legwork you do, you can’t put it aside, it may be best to walk away from it.

4. Understand We All Make Mistakes

One of mankind’s greatest gifts is that we can learn from our mistakes. We are all human here; mistakes will happen no matter how hard you try to prevent them. The more you attempt to bank on a “perfect” situation, the less likely it is to happen. If you take a stumble with grace, you can learn for the next time a situation similar to the one you were in comes up again.

Another point to remember is that mistakes can happen over and over; just try to change the results a little bit each time. If you failed at a task, but you failed a little less than last time, it’s an improvement, so keep working on it.

When it comes to calming down our thinking ability, it can be pretty hard to do. Some people have a natural knack for keeping calm and collected while most of us will fret over the smallest of things.

To get the most out of your day, and really your life, you need to be able to relax and accept things that cannot be changed. To stop overthinking, take a step back, breathe, and do what you feel is right. Sleep on it if you need to, but sometimes you need to rip the Band-Aid off and make that decision!
