We all have dreams every night and yet we know so little. What are the facts about dreams: What do they mean? Can we control them?

Where do dreams come from? I bet you’ve pondered this many times in your life. Dreams come during the REM stage of sleep. This is when brain activity is the closest to what we experience when awake. But I guess that doesn’t completely explain where dreams come from, just when they happen.

Dreams, it seems, originate from the brainstem, and according to scientists, dreams don’t really take that much imagination to be interesting. Hmm, I’m not so sure about that. But I will tell you what I do know.

Here are five interesting facts about dreams that will leave you amazed.

There are a few facts about dreams that might serve as indicators to their purpose, or whether they have any purpose at all. Opinions vary on this subject.

1. The most common dream

If you ever wake up in a cold sweat after a nightmare concerning an extra-marital affair between your partner and someone else, then you are not alone, says Lauri Quinn Loewenberg, a dream expert and author.

The most commonly reported dream is one where your partner is cheating on you.

Loewenberg conducted a survey with more than 5000 people and found a related thread. She discovered that dreams of infidelity where one’s partner chased many men and women, sometimes on a recurring basis, was not uncommon at all.
The good news is, it rarely has to do with a real relationship, but only with a common fear of being alone.

2. You can have different, even a dozen dreams in one night

The truth is that you do not see one dream a night, but rather dozens of them, say experts, it’s just impossible to remember them all. It is estimated that most people have more than 100 000 dreams in their lifetime.

We dream every 90 minutes throughout the night, each dream cycle is longer than the previous one.” says Loewenberg. “The first dream takes about 5 minutes and the last one you see before you wake up can last from 45 minutes to an hour.”

3. You can extend a dream after awakening

Have you ever woken from a beautiful, perfect dream and wished you could go back to sleep and restore the fantasy? Well, you can! Stay still, just like you woke up, without moving a single muscle in your body – thus you can stay in a semi-dream stage for a few minutes.

“Stay in the same position you woke up and don’t open your eyes. When you move your body, you disconnect from the dream you were seeing” says Loewenberg.

4. Even the weirdest dreams can be interpreted

Most times it is hard to believe that a strange dream has any relation with real life. Every dream can contain symbolism and meaning that’s worth being analyzed, says Harvard-trained psychotherapist Jeffrey Sumber. Rather than ignore these strange dreams, think about how they make you feel.

The meaning of our dreams usually has to do with the things we need to understand about ourselves and the world around us,” he saysUsually, we tend to remove such dreams because of the strange sensation they leave, but this sensation is what counts primarily,”

5. You can control your dreams

According to the results of new research including about 3000 people, dream control can be a reality. In fact, 64.9 % of participants reported that they knew they were dreaming, while 34% said that sometimes they can even control what happens in their dreams.

These facts about dreams speak for themselves!

Having control of the content of your dreams is a skill that anyone can develop, says Kelly Bulkeley, dreams researcher, and a graduate of the Theological Union in Berkeley, California.

“The lucid dreaming technique is particularly useful for people suffering from recurring nightmares.”

Dr. Bulkeley suggests saying this sentence before falling asleep:

“If I see that dream again, I’ll try to remember that this is nothing but a dream I’m seeing at the moment.”

When you learn to recognize that you are dreaming, not only will you have the power to leave the nightmare, but you will also train your mind to avoid nightmares in general.

Now you know even more facts about dreams!

Dreams could have great meaning or they could simply be a product of what you ate the night before. Ever hear the story about how Bram Stoker wrote the novel Dracula? Well, let’s just say his seafood meal didn’t agree with him, causing horrible indigestion and bringing forth great visions of one of the notable vampires in literature.

Regardless, many people believe in the merit of dreams and visions and that they have great meaning and revelation in our lives.

How do you see your dreams?
