Super Moon: a unique celestial phenomenon in May 2012

super moonThe Moon’s distance from the Earth is not always the same due to the elliptical shape of the orbit and variations in the gravitational attraction between the Moon, Earth and Sun.

When a full moon occurs close to the perigee of the Moon (a point of its closest approach to the Earth) and its distance from our planet is much smaller than the usual one, then we can observe a “super moon” phenomenon. (more…)

Big Bang: What Did It Look Like?

It looks like we are getting closer to uncovering the origins of our universe. Scientists at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, used the Large Hadron Collider to generate a controlled mini-'Big Bang' to understand how it could have happened in reality. The aim of the experiment was to determine how exactly…

The beginning of the Universe: mysteries and revelations

big bangThe Big Bang theory still remains the prevailing cosmological model explaining the beginning of the Universe. But it can’t answer many questions concerning its early development. Perhaps, any other theory can? Let’s try to find it out.

First of all, let’s have a look at the main statements of the Big Bang theory. Our universe was born after the Big Bang about 13-14 billion years ago. The Big Bang happened everywhere at once. At that time there were no stars, galaxies and even atoms, and the Universe was filled with a very dense, hot and rapidly expanding blob of matter and radiation. Increasing in size, it got cold. Migration to another galaxy may be the future of humanity?

galaxy nebulaThe paradigm of eternal intelligent life has set environmental problems on Earth. Yet, it is not a question of tens or hundreds of years of the fate of human civilization, but of thousands and millions of years.

In recent years cosmologists speak of so-called space time foam, of which many universes are born, and our universe is just a tiny “bubble” of this foam. Thus we can speak of the infinite mega-universe.

The Milky Way, sooner or later will get to the stage of collapse and black hole. After the death of the galaxy there will be only a faint hope that there will remain a piece of information about the past history of humanity. (more…)

Our universe is flat as a board, say astrophysicists

flat universeOur universe is flat. Such a conclusion is made by international team of researchers led by Alain Benoit, who made an amazing experiment in the Swedish city of Kiruna. Scientists reported their findings at a conference of the Committee on Space Research.

At a moonless night the Archeops telescope was raised to a height of 33 km. The telescope has allowed scientists for twelve hours to monitor the cosmic background radiation, which is one of the most important evidence of the Big Bang theory. (more…)

Earth-like planet is discovered

earth like planetA planet that is at least 4.5 times bigger than Earth but is at right distance from its sun so that it could be habitable has been discovered quite close to us.

Scientists believe that up to now it is the most probable planet to host life. Even though they haven’t managed to find out if it is solid like Earth or is a gaseous giant.

The planet candidate for life is only 22 light (more…)
