From time to time, we all have terrible, very bad, and unlucky days.

Failure at work, getting off on the wrong foot, bad mood, dealing with annoying people, disappointing conflict with your family members, an alarming diagnosis from your doctor, etc… There may be many reasons.

Here are some tips to deal with unlucky days and take control of your life:

1. Resist the desire to “please” yourself with impulsive behaviors

The pleasure does not last long, and then you feel guilt, loss of control, and other negative emotions that will only aggravate the situation.

So when you find yourself thinking, “I’ll feel better if I drink a beer, eat a donut, smoke a cigarette, buy new jeans,” ask yourself if it really will make you feel better.

2. Do something good for someone else

The statement “when I do good, I feel good” really works. For some, to do something good for someone else in a difficult period of time is the only way to feel better. It will certainly distract you from your problems but will also make you feel better about yourself.

3. Distract yourself

Do something completely unrelated to your problems. Take a walk, visit your parents, or read a good book. Sometimes all we need is to take some time off constant overthinking and trying to find the solution for our current situation.

4. Seek inner peace through outer order

Sometimes doing some housework really helps: cleaning up, washing dishes, or throwing away unnecessary stuff. Mundane activities can induce meditative states. So it’s true that a trivial activity such as washing dishes can have a calming effect on your mind.

5. Say to yourself, “Well, at least I did…”

Yes, you had a terrible day, but at least you went to the gym, played with your children, did something important on a personal project, or finished a task at work.

Come on, I’m sure that you can find something to be proud of! Try to find something good about your bad day – something that is worth praising yourself for.

6. Stay tuned

If you have a bad day, it is easy to isolate yourself from the outside world. Try to meet and talk to people, especially your close ones. Getting your troubles off your chest will make you feel better.

7. Sleep on it

Go to bed earlier and start all over again in the morning. In addition, the lack of sleep will only worsen your mood, so more sleep will benefit you.

8. Remind yourself of the other aspects of your life

If you are having problems at work, call your friends or parents. Do not miss the chance to be around people who love you, appreciate you, and are always happy to see you.

9. Think ahead

Ask yourself: “Will this problem still matter in a month? In a year?” Soon you will not even remember some of the things that do not give you peace of mind now. The truth is that unlucky days are just that – days. What is tormenting you right now probably won’t matter in a week or a month.

10. Write it down

It is one of the most effective techniques to deal with current problems. Write it down and read it a day or a week later and most probably, you will find it funny or stupid.

11. Be thankful

Remind yourself that an unlucky day is not a disaster. Perhaps, it could be worse.

We all have unlucky days from time to time when we feel like the whole world is against us. Don’t give up – it’s just a bad day. Be sure that you still have a lot of lucky and happy days in front of you!
