How do you recognize a narcissistic liar? Whenever they open their mouths? Narcissists live in a world of fantasy constructed by their own making. But if you’ve been living in this fantasy world for some time, untangling this web of lies is challenging. So, when is a narcissist lying?
Narcissists display certain behaviors when they lie. They can become defensive and emotional, or fly into a narcissistic rage. Here are 15 behaviors that reveal the narcissist’s lies.
15 Behaviors That Reveal a Narcissistic Liar
1. They keep changing the story
You can get dizzy trying to follow the narrative when a narcissist lies. They change details, people involved, times and places until you’re so confused you give up, which of course is their aim all along.
2. They go into excessive detail
This is another behavior typical of narcissistic liars. They’ll bombard you with unnecessary details, which muddle the story. The narrative becomes confusing, and you don’t know what’s true or false.
3. They go into convince mode
“If the words don’t add up, it’s usually because the truth wasn’t included in the equation.”
Amy Rees Anderson
Narcissists will say things like “I swear to God” or “I promise you on my mother’s life”, to convince you they’re telling the truth. But the truth is just the truth. It doesn’t need emphasis or underscoring; it is what it is.
You often see criminals say things like this in police interviews. They know their story is shaky, so they add heartfelt promises to make the investigators think they’re being genuine. But have you ever said, “I swear to God” when you’re just sharing information?
Narcissists will also use qualifiers such as ‘honestly’ or ‘literally’, or absolutes like ‘never’ or ‘always’.
4. They suddenly change the subject
When it’s obvious a narcissist’s story is falling apart, they will suddenly change the subject. This is to stop any further interrogation. While you’re mulling over the lies in previous conversations, they are coming at you with fresh stories. It’s a mental juggling act that keeps you off balance.
Here’s a good example. A male friend of mine dated a narcissist who was pathologically jealous and accused him of mentioning another girl’s name 30 times in an hour. That’s once every two minutes! When he pointed this out, she shut the argument down and switched the subject.
5. They emphatically deny your accusations
If these tactics don’t work, they go into denial mode. It won’t matter if you have solid proof, they will insist they didn’t do or say what you’re accusing them of.
Narcissists are so convincing because they believe the lies they’ve told. Their entire persona is a lie. They have constructed a False Self, which consists of lies and is integral to their ego, so it’s imperative to protect it at all costs.
6. They go after your character
This is a gaslighting tactic designed to make you question your recollection of events. They’ll call you crazy or make fun of you. They’ll accuse you of being forgetful or getting things wrong. It sows seeds of doubt in your mind, which is just enough for them to hoover you back into their orbit.
7. They accuse you of being too sensitive
“A narcissist will say ‘get over it’ because your feelings are trivial to them. If it’s not about them, they’re not interested.”Unknown
Narcissists will accuse you of being too sensitive or lacking a sense of humor when they’re covering up a lie. In healthy relationships, if we’ve upset our partner, we’re sorry and want to apologize.
The last thing we want is to make our loved ones feel degraded or sad. Narcissistic relationships are all based around the narcissist and their feelings. Your feelings don’t matter. Your sole purpose is to feed their ego.
8. They play down the lie
Narcissists never take responsibly for their actions, so they’ll downplay the lie. They’ll say, “Oh, it was just…” or “It was nothing…” or “God, you’re so serious.” It’s another gaslighting technique to make you feel insecure.
9. They blame you
“A Narcissist is someone who sticks their head up their own ass, then blames you for the smell.”Steve Maraboli
Narcissistic liars will blame anyone but themselves for lying. When they mess up, it will be your fault they had to lie or do what they did. If you weren’t so sensitive, jealous, aggressive, angry, pathetic, etc., they wouldn’t have to lie to you.
10. They have an exaggerated emotional response
I have a family member who is a bit of a narcissist, and when challenged, he’ll go into hysterics. “Why don’t you believe me?” he’ll wail. The tears will flow suddenly, and he’ll flounce out, red-faced, exiting with a dramatic door slam.
Sure, we all have our moments and episodes where we can feel overwhelmed, but frequent outbursts of tears and emotions are signs of a narcissistic liar.
11. They threaten to end the relationship
Question a narcissist, and they’ll act as if you’ve plunged a knife deep into their heart. They’re so hurt! How can you not believe them? They love you! Why would they hurt you? If they think you’re getting close to the truth, they’ll take drastic measures to keep you onside by threatening to end the relationship.
This is a distraction tactic designed to get you to back down and forget about the lies.
12. They play the victim
Narcissists portray themselves as the victim for attention and to gain sympathy, but also to avoid being accountable for their lies. They play on your empathy. In fact, narcissists attract empaths who want to ‘fix’ them, and they use the victim card to manipulate and use the empath.
13. They get defensive
Narcissistic liars play on your emotions when they’re lying. It’s an effective gaslighting technique because it stops you from thinking logically about their claims.
14. They give you the silent treatment
Narcissists need to maintain their facade and get angry when it’s threatened by something as meaningless as the truth. Vulnerable narcissists will sulk and give you the silent treatment, not just to escape confrontation but to punish you in a passive-aggressive way.
15. They go into a rage
Grandiose narcissists react differently. They’re furious you’re questioning their integrity, and this triggers narcissistic rage. Woven into their ego is this false self, and for their ego to survive, they believe the lies they’re constructing.
So, when they’re confronted, it’s as if the very essence of them is under attack. Grandiose narcissists protect their identity at all costs, and will attack, verbally and physically.
Are narcissists liars?
Every narcissist is a liar. Both grandiose and vulnerable narcissists lie for attention, but for polarizing reasons; grandiose narcissists lie to project the superior image they’ve created, and vulnerable narcissists lie to protect their fragile ego.
Why narcissists lie
The image narcissists present to the world is false, but it’s not just an image to them. It’s their identity, and they have built this identity on lies. Like peeling an onion, there are layers upon layers of lies constructed over time to form this idealized version of themselves.
Underneath all the lies is their fragile, defenseless real self they don’t want anyone to see. And they’ll protect their real selves at all costs, which is why they are pathological liars.
Final thoughts
“The worst thing about being lied to is knowing that you weren’t worth the truth.”Jean-Paul Sartre
We all lie from time to time, but narcissists are pathological liars who lie to protect the facade they present to the world. Once you know you’re dealing with someone who lies constantly, you can spot the lies by recognizing a narcissistic liar’s behavior.
