Predicting the future is a common topic in the film industry that many of us prefer, including the movie Next starring Nicholas Cage, in which the protagonist is capable of predicting a certain event within a few hours before it happens. But some people do not believe that something like this only takes place on a cinema screen and claim that in reality, everyone has this capability.

Predicting the future in everyday situations

In a study, American scientists now claim that human beings may have the ability to predict the future. According to reports, this study may shock the world of science. Currently, the University of Washington researchers are conducting a series of experiments to reveal the unexplained ability of the human brain to predict everyday events.

This is not fortune-telling or superstition. This study will be of help to patients with neurological disorders such as early schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease, mainly because in these diseases, patients suffer from long-term consciousness loss, resulting in mental disorders.

The researchers studied the brain’s Central Dopaminergic System and concluded that it may provide the information to the brain in unexpected situations. They used functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques to record daily data from the test subjects.

The scientist who was in charge of the study, University of Washington associate professor of psychology Dr. Zacks, said that predicting impending events could be affecting our behavior but is also a key component of perception, language processing, and learning.

Researchers are discussing the theory of how it could be possible to predict impending events. Zacks also pointed out that when we watch the videos of the experiments, we are able to predict what will happen next in the video. Zacks conducted experiments on young healthy test subjects by letting them watch videos of everyday life events such as car washing or washing clothes.

After the test subjects had watched a video for some time, the video would be put on hold. Afterward, they would make some of their own ideas to imagine what the subjects in the video would be doing.

The researchers claim that the test subjects showed an accuracy rate of 90% or more in predicting the entire activity of the video. But if the test subjects were called to test some other things, their confidence in predicting the future was clearly lower.

Zacks and his research group are extremely interested in the neurological processes that happened in the test subjects’ brains and expect to reveal how they predicted an impending activity.

Guessing hidden words and images

seeing the futureIn fact, long before these video tests, U.S. scientists have conducted such experiments on predicting the future. In one experiment performed by Professor Daryl Bem at Cornell University, New York, students were asked to memorize a group of words, after which a few were randomly selected for them to spell out.

The results showed that the words they easily remembered were exactly those they were asked to spell out. Professor Bem believes that this could be proof of future events affecting people’s memory.

In another experiment conducted by the same research team, students were asked to view a computer screen in which there were two images hidden by curtains. They had to pick the one that was hiding a pornographic image.

In the results, the success rate of students picking the correct image was high. Moreover, the position of the pornographic image was randomly assigned by the computer, and it could not be determined behind which curtain it was hidden before the students made their choices.

For those who believe in human psychic powers, the results of this study are sufficient to claim that the students showed “superpowers“.

Professor Bem has conducted a total of nine different experiments, with more than 1,000 volunteers, and eight of these experiments have shown similar results. According to reports, the chance that the results are a “coincidence” is just 1 in 74 billion. Professor Bem calls on scientists to be open-minded in accepting this unexplained phenomenon.

So is predicting the future possible, according to science?

The truth is that the scientific community doesn’t take these kinds of studies seriously. They usually receive tons of criticism with scholars saying that the results are biased and the methods are questionable. So things like predicting the future are still impossible, according to science.
