It’s important to protect your energy when things seem to be falling apart. In fact, your energy controls your future.

Hard times visit all of us, some more than others. These difficulties can become so overwhelming to the point that they affect a person’s basic core of energy. In other words, trauma and trouble can shake the foundation of who we are. You’ll need emergency energy protection if you ever get this shaken.

How to protect your energy

So, what does that mean? It means, we need ways to protect our energy, and we need them now. The state of the world isn’t going to be any easier on us from the looks of it, so we must learn to stay centered for our own good. So, here are ways you can cradle your energy in a loving embrace.

1. Smudging

One of the oldest ways to cleanse and protect your energy is by Sage or Palo Santo smudging. What is smudging, you may ask? Well, I will just talk about my own personal experience in that area. I own a small bundle of white sage from the southwest. I use it to ward off bad energies and protect my own.

I set my intentions for myself and my home, and then I burn the end of the bundle, lightly blowing on the fire to keep the bundle alight. Of course, the bundle produces thick smoke and an earthy herbal smell. It may take some getting used to, so be patient.

I walk around with my intentions in mind and cleanse my home of negative energies. Although I’ve never used Palo Santo, it can be used in burning as well.

2. Visualization

Using visual mind-body techniques is powerful. If you are dealing with difficult people in your life, or a stressful job, visual protection can guard your spirit from harm. If your job is the biggest problem, then envision a bright light surrounding you, protecting every part of your body and mind.

However, when it comes to dealing with toxic people, sometimes visualizing a fierce animal pacing around you, protecting and patrolling your space is best. You will have the strength to go and feel the power of protective forces.

Your visualizations are yours, so be creative and imagine things that feel important to you, as they protect your energy.

3. Sanctuary

One of the most important aspects of your life is your home, although we may be tired of it by now. Did you know that others, even you, can bring negative vibes into your home? It’s true. A great way to protect your energy is to turn your home into a sanctuary.

You can do this by bringing in plants, creating a more natural environment, declutter your home, or even play relaxing music. Whenever you walk into your home from elsewhere, you will be enveloped in a feeling of light and life, thus, always renewing your energy.

If you’re home quite a bit now, it’s even more important to create a sanctuary to keep you sane.

4. Grounding

I try to do this as much as possible, even though it’s winter here now. I still walk outside and put my bare feet on the earth. It’s good for connecting with mother earth and it also refills your energy reserves.

Considering we are one with the earth, grounding can be like holding a loved one’s hand and feeling the warmth and devotion through their skin. Grounding can be done even more in the summer, and yes, this is so good for building your energy. Think of your skin placed upon the skin of our planet. It sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

5. Avoid vampires

There are people out there who are energy vampires. These people will use their negativity, insults, just plain toxic nature to drain you of every ounce of energy. So, with that said, stay away from them, or at least stay away as much as possible.

You will recognize who’s an energy vampire when they leave your home or just move away from you. You will be exhausted, and in the worst cases, feel empty. This is letting you know that you have to protect yourself by keeping the distance between yourself and these leaches.

6. Pranayama

One simple but important way to protect the energy inside you is to breathe. Yes, I know, we breathe every day. I mean deep and long breaths, called pranayama. When you start feeling out of sorts, or stressed to the max, try this breathing exercise.

Take slow inhalations and exhalations, paying attention to your heart rate, which is probably elevated. Then become your breaths. Let them inhale so deep that you can imagine bringing your navel to your spine. Then push out in exhalation, pulling the imaginary connection between belly button and spine back out to a normal place.

This intense concentration will create a shell around your energy core.

7. Boundaries

Although this may seem simple, this is one of the most important ways to save your energy levels. There are friends and family that push your boundaries all the time. I know this because they do it to me. If I say no, they say I am mean. Have you heard that before?

I used to give in to almost anything as I grew up, but I’m working on becoming stronger at holding my boundaries. To protect your energy, you must know your boundaries well and refuse to give them up.

Compromise is okay sometimes, but never let all your convictions, standards, and morals be taken from you. Actively say ‘no’, and get away from people who are always trying to tear down your independence.

8. Solitude and movement

One way to drain your energy is to constantly stare at some sort of screen. It could be a television, a smartphone, or a computer. Some people have forgotten how to function without these things, and yes, it’s slowly draining them of their pure life force, replacing it with constant entertainment. This may be you.

Here’s what you do to help with that: Go outside and get some exercise, like taking a walk. Do more than just ground yourself. This time, dress for the weather and go for a walk. Spend some time in solitude, in a quiet place where you can recharge. It’s important to get away from technology for a bit.

Keep your energy cleansed and powerful

As I said, hard times come, but that doesn’t mean you cannot keep your energy in a protected place. The toxicity or others or situations will really go after your energy levels. It’s as if a negative force is actively out to rob you of your reserves like the energy vampire. Although it could be much larger than any one person.

Or, you could just be depleting your energy trying to do too much for others, and you have to be careful about that. Either way, try some of these techniques to clear the space around your being or change your environment.

Feel free to share the results of how well these things worked for you. Oh, and by all means, put distance between you and those toxic things – bring out those big rays of light and push the darkness away. Hey, I’m just visualizing.

Be blessed.

Thank you for this article. I’m going to use some of these techniques to bring more peace into my life. Do you happen to have any techniques I could use if I’m living with an energy vampire? My husband is always in a bad mood, negative, and an obstructionist. Everyone in our household has spoken to him at length about how his bad mood affects us and he’s had therapy but to no avail. I’m pretty certain he isn’t going to change so what can I do so I’m not so affected by his moods and behavior?

    Hello Laura,

I am sorry that you have to endure this, and I’m familiar with the dreaded feelings. I will share a few things you can do to achieve a bit of peace for yourself. I do know that since this is your husband, you have to spend some time with him, but you can find ways to decompress and cleanse from the negative energy as well.

Energy vampires feed off your happiness, vitality, and such, so every opportunity you get, find a place where the opposite type of people congregate. If you’re an introvert and don’t like being around a lot of people, you can put on headphones and listen to your favorite music to counteract the negative vibes. Creating art like painting or decorating also helped me because I was making things come to life, so to speak, instead of wilting underneath the negative vibes. If you can, take walks, or go for a run to clear your head and revitalize your spirit.

You can also join groups with others who deal with similar problems and share other ideas too. You can try something interesting too. The next time he starts talking negatively, start singing a happy song, maybe not loud, but just softly. Watch as the negative seems to either run away or make him angrier. Be careful and don’t start a fight. I just want you to see that this vampire draining is an evil energy that hates good things. It may not be his fault, but he is struggling, and ashamed to get help.

I hope this helps. Be careful and try to keep the peace. That’s your first priority.
