When having a friendly conversation, the last thing we want to do is push people away. And sometimes it’s not intentional. However, it can have the same effect.
Do you push people away during conversations? If so, it’s important to understand exactly what you’re saying that causes others to stop engaging with you.
While you might be carefully choosing your words and phrases to make the conversation enjoyable, you could be making mistakes. Sometimes, it’s the small nuances in your words and statements that turn people off. Various factors can also contribute to pushing others away.
Don’t push people away with your words!
Do you ever wonder why it’s so difficult to connect with others? While some people have language barriers and non-verbal communication, some individuals use distasteful wording that pushes others away. Whether it’s on purpose or unintentional, it’s time we got to the bottom of this and figured out how to change the way we relate in conversations.
Here are a few phrases that are sure to push people away, and fast!
1. “I have to think of myself first.”
This phrase can be taken in two ways. It either means you are self-absorbed or you’re simply focusing on improving your own life before getting involved in someone else’s drama. But you can definitely push people away if you come off as self-absorbed by only talking about yourself.
So, be careful when using this phrase and make sure to elaborate on what you mean.
2. “I don’t like drama.”
I suppose it’s a good thing not to partake in drama. But some people hear this statement and think you are not interested in their problems at all. If you don’t want to push people away, you should support them in whatever they may be going through.
Also, narcissists love to say this as a way to make themselves look better. They actually feed off drama. Let’s say your friend really needs someone to talk to, and you start the conversation with this phrase. They are more likely to stop talking to you and confide in someone else. So, choose your words carefully.
3. “I’m fine.”
This statement pushes people away because it is dismissive. If a friend notices that something is off about you, and you keep saying that you’re fine, it’s confusing. They don’t know whether to press further or leave you alone. If you make a habit of doing this, it will drive your friends away for good.
So, if you’re going through something, and you feel comfortable talking about it, then do. It doesn’t mean you have to ramble on about it or get angry. Saying “I’m fine” alienates both you and your friends in the relationship. Only say this phrase when you are truly fine and doing well.
4. “I told you so.”
While you may be tempted to say this on occasion, just don’t. This phrase makes people feel unintelligent. You’re basically saying, “See, I’m smarter than you”. And who wants to be spoken to like that? Not me! You will surely push people away if you get into the habit of saying, “I told you so” every time someone doesn’t take your advice and fails.
5. “Whatever…”
One sure way to push people away is to simply brush them off. When you say this 8-letter word, you are saying so much more, and it’s not all that nice. To expand on this, you will usually have closed-off body language and a hateful expression in conjunction with this statement.
You’re saying,
“I do not agree with what you said, and I will not explain why.”
Or even worse, you could mean this:
“I know that I am right, and I refuse to let your opinions sway me.”
Now, do you see why this one little word pushes others away?
6. “This is just how I am.”
Nothing pushes people away faster than refusing to consider different perspectives. I’m going to let you in on a little secret. You are not always right. I do not care how smart you are or how many years you attended school. I don’t even care about your ‘street smarts’ or wisdom.
Eventually, you will be wrong and make mistakes. You are not above changing. So, go ahead and stop saying, “This is just how I am”. No, it’s not. You’re human and flexible like the rest of us.
Please stop pushing people away!
The world can be a dark place, and despite what you think, we need each other. Why don’t you join me in rephrasing language and improving conversations. I will admit that there is room for improvement in my vocabulary.
If you know someone who is constantly pushing people away, maybe you can share these insights with them. It’s not guaranteed to work, much like many things in life, but it’s sure worth a shot. I hope this helped you understand more about yourself and others. Go out and share love and knowledge. The world needs it desperately.
