Healing your sacral chakra can be very important for your mental and physical wellbeing. The sacral chakra is the second chakra, located around the tailbone area, just above your genital area. It is called Swadhisthana in Sanskrit and is normally associated with the colour orange (one shade up from the sacral chakra), and the element of water.

Because of these associations, the sacral chakra is responsible for emotions, both the controlling of emotions and the emotional responses that people have. It is also, naturally associated with some reproductive functions, which sacral chakra healing can help with.

Where the root chakra (Muladhara) has a close relation to the sacral chakra, the sacral chakra is responsible for and concerned with matters which are removed from the strictly material focus of the root. The sacral chakra is so important because it allows us to react to the world and to interact with it in a creative and non-destructive manner.

Because of its close physical connection with the pelvis area and the reproductive organs, this chakra is also the centre of the search for pleasure, whether sensual or through your daily life experiences. Abundant creativity and strongly felt intuition are two additional facets of an open sacral chakra.

The sacral chakra governs reproductive functions. Since it is also the centre of many emotional concerns, it often pushes people towards the pursuit of pleasure, both for themselves and for others.

Sacral chakra healing can help people with a dysfunctional Swadhisthana become involved with many of the things which make life fully enjoyable. Having this chakra be free and open is one of the main ways that people can experience true happiness and fulfilment in their lives.

The signs of an open sacral chakra are as follows:

  • Passion
  • Feeling present in your body
  • Sensuality
  • Creativity
  • Feeling connected to your own emotions
  • Emotional stability
  • Feeling happy and uplifted

The signs of a closed sacral chakra are as follows:

  • Finding it hard to associate with the world and with other people
  • Difficulty with controlling your emotions
  • Inability to feel any emotions
  • Insecurities
  • Failing to deal with the challenges life throws at you
  • A lack of self-confidence
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Fears
  • Failing to feel any joy

Most people are used to the idea that there is one thing wrong, and then there are one or two ways to fix it. This is not the case when it comes to the sacral chakra and its healing. You can be either deficient or excessive in energy, or fall somewhere in the middle.

  • Deficient chakras make you feel lifeless, sluggish, passive, blocked and trapped inside yourself.
  • Excessive chakras make you feel lively, agitated, reactive, aggressive and trapped outside of yourself.

People who have deficiencies in their sacral chakra – who need sacral chakra healing – will, therefore, be more likely to feel detached and emotionless than other people. They will also have difficulty forming connections.

People who have excesses in their sacral chakra will be the opposite: they will be too emotional and find themselves falling into co-dependency if they are not careful.

There are many issues that can come with either type of problem with your sacral chakra.

1. You can get lost in fantasies.

You may end up simply thinking about and imagining the many pleasures that life can provide, rather than living them yourself.

2. You can indulge too much in vices.

You may even go so far as to become addicted to whatever substance you abuse, be it legal or otherwise. The key to health for most people is simply to have everything in moderation. An imbalanced chakra can lead to indulging in whatever brings you pleasure at the time.

3. You can feel unfulfilled, and as if you will never be satisfied.

Being unable to appreciate what you have in life can be a sign of an unbalanced sacral chakra. The same is true about being unable to give yourself what you want in a high enough quantity to feel satiated.

4. You feel co-dependent.

Co-dependency is when you are unable to fully extricate yourself from a relationship as yourself. You always define yourself and need to be defined by the other half of the relationship. Co-dependency can, therefore, be a sign of an unbalanced chakra.

5. You feel a lot of negative and destructive emotions.

An imbalanced sacral chakra can lead to feelings of deep envy, jealousy, and even rage. Overreacting to certain stimuli and irritations is detrimental to your life and your health.

6. You have some physical health problems.

Your sacral chakra does have effects on your physical health as well as your mental and emotional health. As such, a lack of balance in your sacral chakra can affect your sexual functions.

7. You feel anxious and ill at ease.

Being out of balance in your sacral chakra can lead to insecurities, and to a great fear of being surprised or led into something you are unaware of.

8. You are tired.

Being in need of sacral chakra healing can make you feel out of balance can lead to great feelings of fatigue.

9. You are feeling a lack of creativity.

The sacral chakra manages emotions, and since emotion is a huge part of what drives our creativity, being out of balance can lead to a lack of creativity.

10. You are feeling unemotional.

Stifled emotions are a huge part of having an unbalanced sacral chakra.

There are many ways to heal and re-balance your chakras, so don’t despair if you feel as though things are bad.

You can use any combination of colour therapy, yoga, reiki, and other more traditional methods of emotional catharsis and mindfulness. These practices will help you regain a balance or to unblock any blockages which might occur within the sacral chakra.

I absolutely believe in the chakras. This is not some leftover from the hippie days of the 60’s. I wish you would expand on this discussion to include the crown, third eye, throat and abdomen. I believe the sacral chakra is the last of these points on our body. The chakra healing I have experienced over the years has included all chakras.and has amazing results. The healer I had the privilege of experiencing this with was so skilled that I felt the crown chakra all throughout my body as a burst of energy. Everyone should have this healing experience at least once in their life.
