You may think certain behaviors seem normal, but think again. Some of those harmless acts or words can be silent relationship killers.
Several behaviors destroy relationships. While these behaviors seem normal, particular words or actions can destroy any attraction that’s developed over time. In fact, sometimes these things occur between friends, killing a relationship before it even gets started.
Relationship killers that seem like innocent behaviors
These seemingly harmless actions vary from communication problems to complete irreconcilable differences. It’s always best to talk about these negative behaviors to improve things in your relationship. And that’s just the key, if you cannot communicate, you cannot discuss these issues either.
The first step is recognizing what’s going on and determining whether the problem can be fixed. Here are a few examples of those silent relationship killers, so you can decide what to do next.
1. Lack of communication
As I was saying previously, a communication issue can be the single most common cause of relationship problems. Being unable to voice how you feel without some sort of backlash can be crippling.
Some people just don’t know how to communicate properly; they scream or insult to get their way. They see communication as confrontation, but without communication, a relationship rarely lasts. It’s a conundrum. In cases like this, the problem may require professional help.
2. Outside influences
Another behavior that seems normal is sharing relationship problems with friends. Seeking advice from outside the relationship may be supportive, but it also means you’re potentially inviting negative feedback that isn’t necessary.
It’s never okay to talk about all your problems with other friends, as this could cause a rift between you and your partner. It’s especially true when discussing any negative aspects, as this makes your other friends gradually dislike your partner. It’s just best to leave some things between the two of you.
3. Suspicious feelings
When someone is suspicious of another’s behavior, it shows. This action may not be loud, but it’s noticed as jealousy or insecurity. Basically, being suspicious means there is no trust in the relationship, and these feelings can poison any chance of a positive union.
4. Walking away from arguments
Although this behavior seems normal, it can backfire. I’ve seen this happen when partners walk away during arguments to apparently “cool off”. It’s okay to walk away sometimes to keep from getting angry and saying something you’ll regret. But it’s not okay to make this behavior a habit or use it to win arguments.
This will only work for so long. It is toxic behavior, and it is also a silent relationship killer.
5. Ignoring boundaries
Listen, it’s not okay to do things that make your partner feel uncomfortable. It’s about consent, basically respecting boundaries. One of the fastest ways to kill a relationship is to ignore standards or preferences.
Just because you are in a relationship with them does not give you access to every part of their life all the time. People are individuals, and they all deserve to have their boundaries respected.
6. Constantly complaining
Constant complaining can be a problem in your relationship. Even if you aren’t complaining about your partner, it can still affect the mood between you two. It’s okay to vent to each other because you are supposed to be supportive, but it’s not okay to use your partner as a dump for all your frustrations. This is definitely a silent killer.
7. Comparisons
Some behaviors seem normal, but they can destroy your self-esteem, along with your relationship. It’s easy to go on social media, for instance, and see perfect couples with perfect lives. Well, that’s how we see it. But truthfully, you’re seeing the best of their lives and comparing it with the worst of yours. That’s just ridiculous.
This behavior not only kills relationships, but it also promotes an unhealthy and unrealistic view of what life is really like. Never compare yourself or your partner with anyone else.
8. Unforgiveness
True forgiveness isn’t in the words you say, it’s in how you feel on the inside. You know if you’ve truly forgiven someone or not. And any unforgiveness can destroy any chance you have in a relationship.
Unforgiveness, while often silent, presents itself as resentment, animosity, and just an overall negative vibe in your environment or home. Do not let unforgiveness go unchecked, either because it can snowball into something much bigger.
9. Losing individuality
This is one aspect of my life that I discovered later on. I found that loving myself and knowing myself were both important. For years before, I’d ignored this. Many people, when entering into a relationship, will pour everything into their mate and then into their children, completely forgetting who they are.
I lived this. I became a silent, unnamed presence behind my husband and children, and this contributed to failures in my relationship. Never forget to spend time with yourself and get to know yourself before you attempt to love and take care of others.
10. Being around each other all the time
Yes, it is important to spend quality time together. But it is also important to spend quality time alone, too. Being around each other all the time will eventually cause more arguments and even a sort of complacency. Being apart for a little while makes the relationship stronger and makes the time you spend together more fun.
When you’re young, being stuck to your partner may seem normal, but over time, it becomes toxic, and yes, it kills relationships.
What can we do with what we learned?
Well, you may not be able to take back any actions or words from before, but you can start anew. The best way to naturally avoid things like this is to respect your partner and do everything out of love instead of selfish gain. Most of these examples can be avoided that way alone. As for anything else that you may struggle with, just take it one step at a time.
I am sure you will be better and do better. I am also sure you will be able to teach others these things as well.
Be blessed.
