Read the story below and answer as spontaneously and quickly as possible.

There are two neighboring islands. In the first one live two men: an uncivilized savage and a civilized man. On the other island, there are several people, among them a girl who is in love and has a relationship with the civilized man.

The girl wants to go to the opposite island to meet her lover. She asks the only boatman of the island how much he wants to take her there. The boatman says that he does not want money and he will take her to the other island if she is naked in the boat.

The girl is shocked… not knowing what to do she goes to the wise man of the island to ask for help. He listens to her story with attention and gives the following advice: “Do what your heart tells you, my child…” So the girl decides to accept the proposal of the boatman in order to meet her beloved man.

So, they go to the other island. But when they arrive, the savage is on the seafront and gets crazy at the sight of the naked woman so he rapes her… At the same moment, the civilized man comes and sees the scene. He goes mad and tells the girl that he does not want her anymore and she must leave immediately…

Evaluate the 5 characters of the story (savage, civilized man, girl, boatman, wise man) from the best to the worst, so that the number 1 is the character that you believe to be the best person in the story and the 5th is the worst of all.

Interpretation

Each character of the story represents a priority in your life:

Savage = how important sex is for you;

Civilized man = importance of other people’s opinion;

Girl = your need for an emotional relationship;

Boatman = your need for earning money;

Wise man = how much you rely on logic.

The interpretation doesn’t make any sense.

    My ranking would be:

    1. The girl (for her innocence, drive, and kind heart)
    2. The wise man (his advice was nothing logical I must say, but he didn’t know she was going to be raped; although how could he be called wise for giving such unwise advice that landed the girl raped and with her heart broken?)
    3. The savage beast (he didn’t know any better, didn’t know right from wrong, and did nothing wrong in his eyes)
    4. Civilized man (for seeing her just as a woman that got raped as being touched and something less valuable that an untouched woman, without considering what she went through to get to him)
    5. The boat man (why would he ask the woman to be naked in the boat without considering what would happen to her once the savage man saw her. I’m under the assumption that he knows who lives on the other island since he goes back and forth on this boat, making him the worst character)

Boat man is at bottom for making her do that, knowing she was in a relationship. Above him, the savage. Yes he raped the woman. I still think he is better than the boatman. Then it goes the civilized man. Jumped to conclusions too soon and didn’t stop the rape. The woman is the victim here, but she compromised her integrity for the boatride. On top is the wise man. He offered his service, but without asking the woman to do anything outlandish or being rude. He is the only one not at fault to me, so he is on top.

It took a while to decide, I thought they were all as bad as each other, except the civilised man being the real baddy. But, if one must choose:

    1. Savage
    2. Wise Man
    3. Girl
    4. Boatman
    5. Civilised Man

Because 1. Rape is never right, but this man is a savage and knows nothing else. He acts as an animal would. 2. What rubbish advice! Wise Schmise. 3. Foolish girl. If she was already having a relationship she should’ve waited for him. 4. Perverted opportunity taker, should have known better, worse than the savage & should’ve protected her. 4. Don’t get me started on the “civilised” man… Grr

  8. Kelsei

    1. Woman

    This is very accurate.

  9. sabrina griffen

I would say the prick that broke up with the girl was worst because of leaving her because she was raped the savage man #4 for the rape the boat man #3 for taking advantage of the girl with his perversion the girl #2 for running after a man who wasn’t willing or didn’t want to run to her and degrading herself by accepting the boat mans terms to do so and the wise man #1 for giving her life in a wholes best advice.

  10. Vermin8

I put them all in the negative category. I put the wise man as a little less negative than the worse. If he had said “do what you think is best” I would have put them in the good category. But my telling her to rely on her heart he led her wrong. Other than him, the girl was a fool, the savage a violent rapist, the civilized man, someone willing to punish the victim of a crime, and the boatman a pervert. No good characters here.

  11. Dom

    1. girl
    2.wise man
    3.savage
    4.boatman
    5.civilized man

I thought the civilized man would be more understanding that she got raped and didn’t consent to having sex with the savage. But in the savages defense, if he had been stuck on an island with only another man for god knows how long and then see’s a naked woman for the first time then its only nature for a wild animal to want to mate with it. The boat man was just a perv and the wise man needs him name changing to “shit advise man”.

Ok. The question becomes, the wise man.. so a wise man tells a woman to follow her heart.. not her mind.
The boatman listens to his heart too.. and wants to ferry her naked. Mind would have askes for money.
On the other side.. the savage also follows his heart(emotion) to rape her.. mind would have instructed fear.
On the other hand, only the civilized man listens to his head.. and not the heart.. heart would have still loved.

So, everyone else was using his heart.. except the civilized man?

~I choice this order for these reasons. the girl because she tried to seek help with her decision.
~The savage next, because he is who he is, there was no pretense and his actions should not have been unexpected or underestimated…. Everyone knew he was savage.
~ I choice the boatman next because he was up front with his request. It was up to the girl to make a decision about his request and possible intentions.
~next I choice the civilized man because, I felt if he could drop her that quickly, I don’t believe his feelings were reciprocated for the girl in the same way she felt about him. Therefore, I would think he was just using her.
~ I put the wise man last as I feel if he was that wise, he really did not give her sound advise…… in fact he gave her, in my estimation, no advise as she came to him with a direct question and he blew her off.

  16. ZoSo

1-Savage: He’s /uncivilized/ and has animal instincts, he can’t help it, he’s just doing what his primitive nature tells him to do to reproduce etc.
2- Girl: Wanted to be with her love, understandable, but dude don’t get naked with a stranger
3- Boatman: did a nice favour but at a weird request
4- Wise Man: a little more clear advise would have sufficed
5- Civilize man: If someone gets raped don’t avoid them like the plague, they’re still people

This test is stupid. Rape is about violence and power, not sex. Therefore, the savage man should not represent your desire for sex; the boatman should. Completely dumb.

  28. Mark Jacobs

    1. Girl, she is true to herself and self sacrificing
    2. Wise man, He tries to be helpful, although his advise led to trouble
    3. Savage man, he has problems and acts out of instinct. he is my neutral person.
    4. Boatman, he is a licentious person looking to keep his hands clean while making others hurt.
    5. Civilized man, he has no concern for anyone but himself. he is the most selfish of all and reflects the general attitude of todays civilized society.

  29. Shan

    1) wise man.
    2) civil man
    3) savage man
    4) boatman
    5) girl

  30. Richard

    Girl
    Wiseman
    Boatman
    Civilized man
    Savage
The girl just wanted to be with the one she loved
The wiseman gave fair and honest advice
We don’t know why the boatman wanted her naked and can only guess.
The civilized man reacted in anger instead If compassion and should have thrown the savage off the island.
The savage as worst needs no explaining

  31. Kingsley

    1. Wise man: Gives advice to fallow heart.
    2. The girl: takes is advice and fallows her heart.
    3. Civilized man: does nothing good, but only breaks the womas heart
    4. Savage man: Is savage, and ruins the feelings inbatween civi and her
    5. Boat man: From is perverted mined, causes woman to be raped and true love to be lost. Maybe none of this would have happened if she was clothed.
Then again is the wise man the one at fault because he tells her to fallow her heart and starts the chain recaction.
Is the savage really that bad?
OR is the man who says she is not good enough for her the worst of all.
Or is the girl at fault her, if she didn’t like an asshole, didn’t ask the boatman, didn’t consider his offer, and asked the wiseman, and took his advice, and decided that her heart lay with this opinionated douchebag, maybe savage man wouldn’t have raped her and none of this would have happened.
    YOU CHOOSE

  32. vicky

Best to worst: Wise man, Girl, Savage, Boatman, Civilized.

Why: The first two for the obvious reasons, they did nothing to hurt anyone, the savage because he knows no better, there is no right or wrong, The boatman because he took advantage of the girl who wanted to see her love and finally the civilized man who supposedly loved the girl. He showed no love, no understanding and no compassion for what she went through.

Savage = NOT “how important is sex for you,” RATHER, how easily overwhelmed by clear and provocative sexual messages.
Civilized man = NOT, “importance of other people’s opinion,” RATHER, judging people on their ACTIONS vs. their words.
Girl = NOT, “your need for emotional relationship,” RATHER, your inability to make sound judgements on your own and the lack of truly wise people in your life.
Boatman = YES, “your need for earning money,” and ability to dare offer a most ridiculous price, knowing you’ll be thought the worse for it and not the girl who, uncoerced, ACCEPTED.
Wise man = NOT, “how much you rely on logic,” RATHER, how gutless you are in not advising a naive (or foolish) “girl” when she seeks to embark on a clearly dangerous endeavor unnecessarily; surely a “wise man” has learned to row in all that time?

  36. Predrag

I’m sorry, but I’ll have to change my mind. After thinking twice, I guess I should place the Savage before the Civilized Man. This is not because I read the meaning of those characters (which I actually did even before I did my first evaluation), but simply because the behaviour of the the Civilized Man is worse than that of the Savage. The former should know better than that, the latter acts in total accordance with his raw natural urges.

    Savage

I agree for the first two, they are VERY important to me… It’s scary how true this is. Maybe even the third one is true, but only a bit.
Overall, I really do think this is true.. given the choices b/w these 5 things (Money, Logic/Thinking, Love, Sex and Opinions of others)

  39. Ria

1- wise man, he gave advice it was up to her (best)
2- the girl, not knowing that the boatman was settin her up for the savage
3- the savage cos he is.
4- the boatman for setting her up to be raped cos he woulda known and thats what the perv wanted to see
    5- how dare he!!! (worst)

  40. Tony

1 The Girl: She is following her heart to be with the man she loves.
    2. The Wise Man: He tells her the truth, that only she knows what is in her heart and a young person in love will follow their heart regardless of any advice.
3.The Savage: He is true to his self, and while I find his actions despicable, I can understand his motivation.
    4. The Boatman: I don’t know his reason for requiring her nudity, but, I suspect his motivation was impure at best.
    5. The Civilized Man: To reject her for what happened instead of rushing to her and comforting her and letting her know that She Will Survive with his help, Makes me ashamed to be called a civilized man.

  41. Vanessa

I agree with my results. Relationships and sex are important to me. Logic is too, but I also realize that not everything is as it seems. I like to do my own thing, and I believe money is a root of evil.

    1. Girl
    2. Savage
    3. Wise man
    4. Civilized man
    5. Boatman

I understood the girl’s dilemma. Since the savage man was uncivilized, I didn’t hold his actions against him. I was indifferent to the “wise man”, because he wasn’t very wise or helpful. The civilized man was insensitive to me, and the guy on the boat is a slob, so

    1. Civilized man
    2. Savage

    5. Boatman

My logic is if the boatman did not request the girl to be naked and the wise man suggested she not sell herself and the girl didn’t take the easy way out the savage may have not raped her he is only a Savage what to expect and the civilized man realized if she was willing to be naked he didn’t want her after all. Not so bad his decision.

  45. Kevin Zhao

    Girl
    Boatman
    Wiseman
    Civilized man
    Savage
I find the civilized man disgusting. The savage was born a savage and stayed a savage, and the civilized man never bothered to help. He then leaves the girl after her emotional trauma which isn’t her fault.
Wiseman wasn’t so wise because if he were as wise as he is he would have predicted what would have happened, like how most of us did, I presume.
Girl’s not a bad person, just hella stupid.
Boatman doesn’t give a shit about the girl, 🙁
the explanations make no sense, could someone explain to me?

  46. CAS

    1. Girl
    2. Wise man
    3. Savage
    4. Civilized man
    5. Boatman

    5. The boatman was the instigator of all that followed – the root of the evil.
    4. The civilized man is contemptible for his lack of compassion and cruelty.
    3. The savage is what he is – he acts accordingly.
    2. The wise man is neutral and inoffensive – he encourages self-reliance.
    1. The girl is willing to sacrifice ego for love.

  47. Marlo Mannix

    1.) wiseman
    5.) Boatman

My opinion the Wisman advised “to thy own self be true.”
The Boatman….what the H*** was his intent???

  48. Brad

1)The woman is guilty of nothing but being genuine and in love
2)The wise man gives advice based on what he believes, again no ill intent
3)The boat man is sleezy for his request
4)The savage knows not the harm or discourse his actions cause, he did an evil thing but is ignorant of civilized culture.
    5) The worst human in this story is the civilized man, he should have been there to console his love that risked everything to see him. Instead, he is consumed by image and she doesn’t fit his perfect view anymore. That is simply deplorable.
