Many of us can feel at times (or all the time!) that we go through life powerless to change what goes on around us and what happens to us.

However, what most people don’t realise is that we all have the power to obtain the things we truly desire and we can set off on a path to acquiring those things today! Here is our ultimate guide to getting what you want.

If you want something you never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.
-Thomas Jefferson

1. Take control of the things you can

Taking control of even the smallest aspects of your life that previously felt a little haywire can restore calmness and a sense of empowerment in your life. Having a daily routine which includes, for example, exercise and certain meals can allow us to compartmentalise our lives to better cope with bigger things we simply don’t have control over.

The converse side of this discipline crucially is letting go of those things, as worrying over something which is out of our control wastes valuable energy and emotional resources. Take control of what you can, feel at ease, and let go of the things you can’t.

2. Be assertive

Learn to say no, prioritise and always speak your mind in an honest and open way. People love honesty – it’s always the best policy. Putting yourself first is not selfish – in fact, it’s key to getting what you want out of life. Feeling like a doormat heavily influences your ability to succeed – so assertiveness is very important.

3. Check your body language and learn to ‘read’ others

We’re often concentrating so closely on what we say and do that we forget the subliminal, primal messages we send out that show how we react physically to situations. However, body language is very powerful – you can manipulate others to look at your point of view more favourably, for example, by adopting a certain kind of posture and even moving in a different way.

Similarly, if you learn the disciplines of body language, you’ll be empowered knowing what others may be thinking and feeling just by observing what they do and how they move.

4. Be positive

Research has shown that being positive makes us feel more satisfied and fulfilled in life. This might partly be due to the fact that those who are more positive see more of the good. Either way, it’s a good idea to practice positivity and see if you reap what you sow.

Using the checklist above will certainly put you on the right path to getting what you want out of life. Even if you’re not quite sure of your long-term goals, getting the basics right will stand you in good stead to go for your goals once you’ve decided on them.
