Many of us like to think we are spiritually awakened. But spiritual awakening is a journey, not a destination and we may have further to go.
Becoming spiritually awakened is a lifestyle decision rather than something we can tick off our to-do list. Understanding this helps us to forgive ourselves for any mistakes we make. But it can also make us aware that there is still much work to do on ourselves.
I am far from enlightened. I do many unspiritual things more often than I like to admit. However, I try not to beat myself up about it. As long as I am learning, growing and doing my best to become a better person, then I am on the right path.
The following 11 signs can indicate the areas in our lives where we are not as enlightened as we think.
1. Thinking we have all the answers
If you think your beliefs are the only right ones, then you may not be as spiritually awakened as you think. Spirituality is different for everyone. There are no cast iron rules and values that every spiritual person believes.
2. Judging others
If you often find yourself judging others, this is a sign that you are not as spiritually aware as you might think. Judging comes from the ego, not the spirit. We judge others when they don’t meet our expectations. True spiritual awakening means letting go of these expectations. Remember the adage ‘never judge a man until you have walked a mile in his moccasins’ when you are tempted to make a judgment.
3. Finding it hard to forgive
If you think you are spiritually enlightened but still can’t forgive people when they behave badly towards you, then you have some work to do. Lacking forgiveness is another form of judgment. We can’t ever know the reasons people do the things they do or what we might have done if we had similar experiences.
Forgiveness doesn’t mean you should allow others to treat you badly. However, it does mean looking beyond actions that have come from pain and seeing the spirit of the person behind that pain.
4. Imposing our spiritual beliefs on others
If you believe that your spiritual path is the only correct one, you have once again got caught up with the ego. Only the ego decides that some things are right and some things are wrong. Spirit is beyond such beliefs. It understands only love, compassion, and humility.
5. Avoiding any information that contradicts our beliefs
If you avoid any information that might contradict your beliefs, it shows an underlying insecurity in your spiritual nature. Spiritually minded people are open to other ways of thinking. They stay open-minded and are always ready to learn new things. These might change their beliefs or deepen them but a spiritual person will never close themselves off to possibilities and live a narrow-minded life.
6. Feel insecure
If you feel constantly anxious, insecure or often worry what others think of you, then you may want to work on yourself a little more. Our spirits know that we are wonderful beings worthy of love.
That’s not to say that anxious or insecure people are unenlightened. It just means there is room to grow even more and learn to love and accept ourselves.
7. Not recycling
If you are spiritually awakened, you will want to take care of the world. You will care about other people, plants, animals and the planet as a whole.
Spiritually awake people do not destroy the planet for their own convenience. If you want to deepen your spiritual awareness, it is important to look out at the world and see what you can do to help the planet.
8. Eating factory-farmed food
Similarly, as a spiritually awakened person, you will not want anything to do with any processes that cause pain or damage to other beings. You will be a conscious consumer, aware that you have a responsibility to the world to not cause unnecessary harm.
9. Feeling threatened when someone questions or contradicts our beliefs
Spiritually awakened people don’t mind that others don’t always share their views. There is room in the world for all kinds of beliefs. If someone’s spirituality makes them happy and harms no one else, then you feel no need to convert them to your way of thinking.
That doesn’t mean you don’t share your opinions and advice, but that at the end of the day you don’t need to force everyone else to believe the same as you do.
10. Thinking our healing energy can save the world
Energy is important. However, we cannot just sit back and think good thoughts and believe that this will change the world. Actions are important, too.
Spiritually aware people act on their beliefs and make decisions in line with their spiritual nature.
11. Putting others down
If you criticize others or believe that you are better than them, it is a sign that you have a long way to go to on the spiritual path. Feeling superior to others comes from the ego, not the spirit. The spirit knows we are all of equal value.
This does not mean we shouldn’t take action against people who harm others. But we must do this from a place of love and compassion and a true desire to heal and help.
The road to spiritual awakening is not always smooth. There are ups and downs as we take this journey. Some aspects of our spiritual journey will be deeply painful and others enormously joyful. But our true spiritual nature often shines through in the way we choose to treat others.
When we can manage, at least most of the time, to treat others, and ourselves, with love compassion and non-judgement we can be sure we are on the path to becoming more spiritually enlightened.
