There is an invisible force that rules the human will. It’s the power of the subconscious mind. It can be easily controlled and this is what makes it dangerous because it may be controlled not only by the person who owns it but also by someone else. We tend to believe that human is a being with a free will. But is it really like that?
Experiments on the subjects of hypnotic trance have shown that there is a mechanism that accepts all the given commands and then applies them to a person without them being aware of it.
What exactly happens? Who has the ultimate authority in your life? The truth is that absolute power belongs to our consciousness. It controls and directs our every action according to the system of our values and beliefs. But if it is so, then what role does our subconscious mind play?
What is the subconscious mind?
Subconsciousness is a “file” that brings together all the things we have not processed in a conscious way. Those pieces of information that are invisible for the consciousness will go there and then will collaborate with the left hemisphere, which is supposed to process logical events and situations.
Facts, beliefs, and commands that are imposed on a person under a hypnotic suggestion do not pass through the logical part of the brain (left hemisphere), which means that it can’t process and reject these pieces of information.
The subconscious has a self-evident weakness that can be useful but also dangerous. It is not able to distinguish the lie from the truth. Whatever your subconscious mind accepts under certain conditions (which will be analyzed below) is taken for the truth. Now, let’s talk about these mechanisms in more detail.
How does the power of the subconscious work?
As an example, let’s look at how advertising companies try to control people by understanding the power of the subconscious and its mechanisms.
1. Constantly repeating statements depending on what we seek or what we want to hear.
2. Using images that affect the control centers of the human brain. When a war movie is released, everyone who is talking about it visualizes certain images in their mind.
The more you talk about it, the more vivid the images become, and the subconscious start to think that they are real. Pay some attention to where they are trying to focus the attention of the world and learn what will happen in the near future.
3. Intense emotions associated with events that retrieve corresponding images. Fear is the strongest emotion and it is not surprising that it is widely used by those who want to achieve their purpose.
In psychology, it is called ‘fear appeal‘ and this effect is widely used in marketing campaigns all over the world. An example of this effect in action is the beauty industry that exploits the fear of getting old to make you buy expensive anti-aging products.
This plethora of statements, images, and emotions we hear, see, and feel is a creative material for the subconscious. It stores this information and transfers it into the center of decision making in the left hemisphere. Everything else is just a matter of time.
The ideal circumstance for such a process is the Alpha brain waves that involve a relaxed state of mind. This means that we become more susceptible to any ideas while in this state.
But you can benefit from the power of the subconscious too. If you want to avoid being controlled by others, make sure you stay as mindful as possible and use critical thinking skills to filter out deceptive or unnecessary information.
