We all believe that we are pretty smart, however, there are a few things we do every day that reduce our intelligence.

While there are a number of things that contribute to this effect, here are the top five that are impacting your productivity as well. What are you guilty of?

1. Lack of Sleep

One of the biggest contributors to “stupid acts” is the lack of sleep! When our mind is groggy, we are not able to react quickly or think on our feet.

The general rule of thumb is that humans need at least eight hours of sleep every night. Depending on your sleep schedule, this may be more, or it could be less; get the proper amount good for your body, not your schedule.

2. Stress

When our mind is preoccupied, it takes a lot of our concentration whether we realize it or not. An excellent way to de-stress yourself is to make a list of all the things you can realistically accomplish that day.

Another way to simply walk away from the problem for a few minutes, get some air, and come back with a fresh perspective.

3. Multi-Tasking

While you feel as though you are getting more accomplished, the quality of the produced work may suffer. If you are working on several projects within a short time span, or if you are thinking about another project while doing something else, the quality of work is significantly reduced.

When it comes down to reducing multi-tasking, you need to manage your time, give each project its 15 minutes of fame, where it gets dedicated, uninterrupted time. You would be surprised how much more productive your day is!

4. Poor Ventilation

While this may seem odd, it also applied to lighting. If a room is dim and stuffy, your brain will think it is still time to sleep, thus being less productive. An excellent way to combat this is to add some lights to brighten up your office or workspace.

If you can, open a window or get a small fan to push some air around. These two combined can make you more lively and ready to face the challenges of the day, or at least fend off nap time for a few hours.

5. Poor Diet

Our last factor is one that causes the most uproar for those working in the building, cut out the fast food!

Your brain needs vitamins and minerals to keep you active and alert, while junk food can alter your mood, causing you to crave more fats, and the heaviness of the meal makes you tired. When you take care of your body, it will do more for you.

These five fast facts on boosting your productivity and cutting out the “stupid mistakes” are something that anyone can apply to their lives. Take the time to renew your body and give yourself a break from the task at hand.

When you stretch yourself too thin, your work suffers, and you risk the chance of looking stupid in front of your boss (and no one wants that!).
